I never had the opportunity to meet this man, the son of my godmother (grammy Babo). He joined the army during the Korean conflict at the age of eighteen. Private First Class Francis R. DeCapot died near Kuni-ri, Korea at the young age of twenty.
As his patrol approached a small hill, they were pinned down by a hail of small arms fire.
Francis immediately volunteered, along with some of his comrades, to remain behind and courageously cover the withdrawal of the rest of his patrol. He selflessly made the supreme sacrifice for his friends and country.
Because he was killed above the 38th parallel, my grandma had to wait five years to bury him, until Korea and the United States exchanged war dead.
To Francis and so many others, thank you!
